Film London - audience data collection, analysis and support pilot project
This pilot project aimed to improve audience information collection and monitoring activities undertaken by a selection of Film London funded clients.
Participant organisations were involved in two ways:
A programme of support and collection of audience data between April 2007 and April 2008, from six film festivals.
- Black Film Makers
- Chinese Film Festival
- East End Film Festival
- London International Disability Film Festival
- UK Jewish Film Festival
- Women's Cinema from Tangiers to Tehran
Support to a further 6 film festivals:
- Africa at the Pictures
- Discovering Latin America Film Festival
- Images of Black Women
- Kurdish Film Festival
- NEON
- Rich Mix
- Watermans
The aim of the pilot was to support festivals and venues, through Film London, to plan and implement effective audience monitoring. And also to establish a standardised set of data to be collected across all participating organisations, to facilitate the development of a benchmark and provide comparisons.
The support took the form of:
- training in audience monitoring;
- one-to-one advice surgeries on monitoring;
- inputting and data analysis tools for monitoring;
- data cleaning;
- data analysis;
- providing contextualising audience information
The outcomes of the project include:
- a pilot benchmark drawing on data from six film festivals;
- individual analysis and reporting on audience data for each of the festivals;
- skills development for staff and volunteers involved with the festivals;
- tools that can be adapted and used in future monitoring activities.
This project was funded by Film London. A full report is available in the resources section to download.
