Current and Recent Clients 

Almeida Theatre long-term support with audience monitoring to inform the audience development strategy and targeted marketing.

CREATE 09 Festival support with data collection and analysis of audience data from across the participant organisations involved.

Design Museum long-term audience monitoring to increase understanding of existing audiences and identify segments for growth, involving the development of the methodology, training, analysis and interpretation.

London Symphony Orchestra audience monitoring support to track response to the orchestra's marketing and refine their audience segmentation.

LIFT audience monitoring for LIFT09 events taking place in different communities across London for reporting and to inform future strategies.

Photographers' Gallery audience monitoring and research support to track levels of visitor engagement through the process of moving buildings and a capital redevelopment.

Shoreditch Audiences long-term support monitoring users of the service, including methodology development, training, analysis and interpretation.

Sound And Music audience development consultancy and primary research to enable the implementation of audience focus within this new organisation (the result of a merger of 4 national new music organisations) increasing understanding of existing audiences and developing an audience segmentation approach.

Theatre 503 marketing and audience development strategy development as part of their organisational development programme.

Write to Ignite audience monitoring support to track changes in audience profile and experience between the 2007 and 2009 festivals.

 

Current Projects

Audiences for free events and outdoor festivals 2009-2010

Stage 1: a scoping study to identify how audience data is currently collected, analysed and used by festivals and outdoor events, and how this is used strategically.

Participants: Independent Street Arts Network, London Mela, Thames Festival, Watch This Space, GLA - Liberty Festival, Big Dance, Refugee Week - Celebrating Sanctuary, London Festival of Architecture, Notting Hill Carnival, London 2012  Host Boroughs - Create 08, Shoreditch Festival, Baishaki Mela

Stage 2:  bespoke support for 5 festivals in collecting and applying audience information, plus a resource guide and development of standard research questions.

Participants: London Mela, Thames Festival, London Design Festival, Liberty, Hackney Carnival.

Project delivered by Audiences London and funded by Arts Council England, London.

 

Audiences for visual arts in London 2008 - 2010

Stage 1: A scoping study to find out what audience information is collected by London's contemporary visual arts organisations and how to best support them to collect and use audience information effectively.

Stage 2: To develop a collaborative framework for standardised audience data collection including a standard set of questions and shared data which enables comparison across the organisations. Combined with advising organisations on ongoing collection and use of audience data plus digital benchmarking.

City Circ audience research

Primary audience research for the Arts Council England, London initiative City Circ - a season of Circus Arts during summer 2009. This project builds on data analysis to better understand the potential audience for Circus Arts to support venues' programming and marketing.

Participants:  Roundhouse, Jacksons Lane, Shunt Vaults, Polka Theatre, Lyric Hammersmith, Arts Depot, Stratford Circus, London Coliseum, National Theatre WTS, Southbank Centre, The Circus Space, Greenwich Dance Agency.

City Circ is delivered by Crying Out Loud, the research is delivered by Audiences London funded by Arts Council England, London.

 

London Dance Companies Audience Development Support

A support programme focusing on understanding audience needs, developing approaches to touring and venue relationships in the context of audience development. Delivered through workshops, collaboratively designed resources and consultancy sessions.

Participants: Akram Khan Company, Candoco Dance Company, Cholmondeleys and Featherstonehaughs, Dance United, DV8 Physical Theatre, English National Ballet, George Piper Dances, Henri Oguike Dance Company, Jonzi D Productions, Michael Clark Company, Rambert Dance Company, Random Dance, Siobhan Davies Dance, Tavaziva Dance Company.

Programme delivered by Audiences London and funded by Arts Council England, London

 

London theatres consortium

A collaboration between 12 of London's leading producing theatres working together to develop stronger relationships with audiences, funders and agencies. As part of the initiative, partners are creating a joint identity to support campaigns targeting infrequent attenders, and boosting their internal capability (especially in CRM and digital innovation).

Participating theatres are: Almeida Theatre, Battersea Arts Centre, The Bush Theatre, Donmar Warehouse, Greenwich Theatre, Hampstead Theatre, Lyric Theatre Hammersmith, Royal Court Theatre, Soho Theatre, Theatre Royal Stratford East, Tricycle Theatre and Young Vic Theatre.  The project is delivered by a partnership between Audiences London and the participating theatres and is funded by Arts Council England's Thrive! programme. All the participating theatres are publicly funded.

 

A Night Less Ordinary - Free Theatre for U26

The same theatres are also collaborating on this ACE-backed initiative, focusing on reaching young people less engaged with theatre and establishing ongoing relationships with young people.

Orchestras benchmarking

A collaboration of London-based symphony orchestras and orchestral venues to identify the opportunities for increasing engagement with orchestral music through a shared understanding of audiences.  The project involves developing benchmarks and exploration of possibilities for collaborative activities plus digital benchmarking. 

Participants: London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Cadogan Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Southbank Centre, Barbican Centre, OAE and London Sinfonietta.

Project delivered by Audiences London and funded by Arts Council England, London and the participating organisations.

 

NI11 Data Support

A support programme to enable boroughs which have adopted the National Indicator 11 (the level of arts engagement within the borough) to understand and identify the levels of arts engagement amongst their residents and as a result adopt strategies appropriate to target groups to increase engagement.

Participant London Boroughs: Waltham Forest, Croydon, Greenwich, Harrow and Hounslow.

Reach

A support programme for local authority arts officers to inspire their approach to increasing engagement within their boroughs.  Workshops, seminars, case studies, peer learning and bespoke support help them develop skills and knowledge and apply learning.

Participant London Boroughs: Brent, Enfield, Greenwich, Hackney, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Lambeth, Merton, Newham, Redbridge, Southwark, Waltham Forest, Wandsworth, Westminster

Snapshot London

An audience data sharing project for venues across London, established in 2002, offering a growing bank of intelligence about cultural consumers attending the arts in London. The information generated includes demographics and detailed information about the cultural habits of millions of households. It is the largest cultural data-set of its kind. It has strategic and practical applications that can aid many functions, from policy-development at one end of the scale, to supporting individual organisations to increase audiences at the other.

Recent Projects

 

Consultation for outer-London venues

This consultation was commissioned by Arts Council England, London as part of its work to support outer London venues to increase engagement in the arts through capacity building around audience development. To ensure any proposed programme was responsive to the needs of the venues this time-limited consultation was undertaken and the findings and recommendations reported back to ACE.

Participants: The Broadway Barking, Arts Depot, Churchill Theatre, Croydon Clocktower, Millfield Arts centre, Harrow Arts Centre, Queens Theatre Hornchurch, Watermans, Polka Theatre, Stratford Circus, Redbridge Drama Centre, Orange Tree Theatre, Rose theatre Kingston.

Respond in Practice 2008/9

An action learning project supporting ACE RFOs to adopt new approaches to increasing the cultural diversity of their audiences. This project brought together learning around developing and sustaining culturally diverse audiences from a variety of sources and initiatives, into a structured and resourced enabling programme.
